Glöcklerläufe - custom
The traditional Glöcklerlauf takes place in the Traunsee region on 5th January. It originated in Ebensee with the purpose of driving away evil spirits.
This superstition exists still today. A motif which has been used on a Glöckler headdress must not be used a second time. Also, a group must consist of odd numbers.
In Traunkirchen the traditionally conscious male population meets for the Glöcklerlauf, which begins at 5.00 p.m.
They run through Traunkirchen with their colourful Glöckler headdresses, and they meet at the Hotel Annerlhof, where old Christmas carols and nativity songs are sung at 10.00 p.m.
The Glöcklerlauf also takes place in Gmunden, where the Three kings come from the lake, and in Altmünster.
