The stretch of the river we call the Gmunden Traun starts downstram from the Theresienthal power station and has been run by the "Friends of the Gmunden Traun" since January 2006.
The whole length of more than 14km is a very varied and well structured stretch of water with natural passages and now and again a build up of water created by damming, which is a challenge for streamer anglers fishing for pike. The Traunfall bei Viecht in the lowest stretch of the Gmunden Traun is a real waterfall, which at one time posed a great danger for shipping, but today, because of the currents and the large conglomerate in the lower passage of the river, it provides an interesting stretch for so-called "pocket fishing". This fascinating river is especially exciting and challenging, because of its width and the varied nature of the river bed with its long, deep channels and fast, shallow streams.
The dammed areas (small ponds or lakes) are particularly attractive as they provide the ideal living conditions for large fish. The lush vegetation almost everywhere and the position of the river deep in the valley, provides plenty of shade. One can wade into many stretches of the Gmunden Traun with no problem, but caution is necessary because of the size of the river and of course by high water.
Clear water is almost guaranteed. The lakes upstream act as a perfect filter, which means that the Gmunden Traun is hardly ever cloudy, even after long periods of rain. Particularly by high water and having chosen a suitable position, the experienced angler will be able to enjoy really good fishing in this great river.
Price of fishing licence: Day ticket "Gmunden Traun" 75,00 Euro.
The fishing season begins on 1st April and ends on 30th November.
The following stretches of the Gmunden Traun may be fished:
from the Theresienthal power station to about 400m downstream from the Traunfall (indicated by a plaque).
